A Performance Prediction of Clock Generation PLLs: A Ring Oscillator Based PLL and an LC Oscillator Based PLL

چکیده
This paper discusses performance prediction of clock generation PLLs using a ring oscillator based VCO (RingVCO) and an LC oscillator based VCO (LCVCO). For clock generation, we generally design PLLs using RingVCOs because of their superiority in tunable frequency range, chip area and power consumption, in spite of their poor noise characteristics. In the future, it is predicted that operating frequency will rapidly increase and supply voltage will dramatically decrease. Besides, rigid noise performances will be required. In this condition, it is not clear neither how performances of both PLLs will change nor the performance differences between both PLLs will change. This paper predicts and compares future performances of PLLs using a RingVCO and an LCVCO with a qualitative evaluation by an analytical approach and with design experiments based on predicted process parameters. Our discussion reveals that the relative performance difference between both PLLs will be unchanged. As technology advances, power dissipation and chip area of both PLLs favorably decrease, while, noise characteristics of both PLLs degrade, which indicates low noise PLL circuit design will be more important. key words: clock generation PLL, LC oscillator, ring oscillator, performance prediction, jitter, power consumption, chip area

Design of Low Phase Noise Low Power CMOS Phase Locked Loops
Phase locked loop (PLL) is one of the most critical devices in modern electronic systems. PLLs are widely used as clock generator or frequency synthesis in communication systems, computers, radio and other electronic applications. Phase noise represents the phase variations of a PLL output signal and is the most important characteristic of PLLs because it reflects the stability of PLL systems. ...

LC-tank VCOs have a superior phase noise performance, however they require bulky passive resonators and often calibration architectures to overcome their limited tuning range. Ring oscillator (RO) based VCOs are attractive for digital technology applications owing to their ease of integrat...

Abstract – This paper gives a performance, power and area comparison of LC vs. Ring VCOs for application to PLL designs in a standard 90 nm digital CMOS process. We develop an analytical framework for determining the best match for a high-speed clock synthesizer design based on the constraints of the application. A type-II PLL is utilized in this study because of its capability for allowing ind...

PLLs are important building blocks that are used to generate and distribute clocks in all high-performance digital systems. Integrating PLLs on large digital chips in deep submicron processes poses three main challenges. First, power supply noise caused by increased digital switching currents degrades the jitter performance of the VCO. Second, the wide loop bandwidth required to suppress ring o...
